About Fort Amherst

Fort Amherst guards the Narrows entrance to St. John’s harbour and offers an accessible combination of maritime history and coastal scenery. Visitors can walk short trails to the lighthouse, explore remnants of coastal defences and enjoy unobstructed views of ships entering and leaving the harbour.

The site is compact but atmospheric, ideal for short visits, picnics and photography. Being close to downtown makes it an easy add-on to a walking tour of St. John’s waterfront and Signal Hill.
